British Values

The Department for Education state there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

We at St. Patrick’s School we are committed to upholding and promoting these values through the curriculum, worship, assemblies and example.

The school’s commitment to safeguarding pupils includes awareness of risks associated with pupils being exposed to extremist views. All members of staff understand that concerns need to be reported to the relevant authorities.

Attitudes and behaviours that contradict these values is always challenged.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.
Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.
Pupils are involved in developing class rules. They take responsibility for the upholding of these through their expectations of others; supporting the adults in school in addressing poor choices by bringing these to their attention.

Pupils are encouraged to see themselves as unique individuals able to make a unique contribution e.g. through our Statements to Live By Assemblies, School Council and Mini-Vinnies group.

Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights, responsibilities and personal freedoms and they receive advice about how to exercise these safely, e.g. through our exploration of E-Safety in computing, and Child Line Assembly and workshops.

Class collective worships are planned and led by the children. Pupils are encouraged to be independent in their learning, taking responsibility for overcoming barriers where they came, identifying their own success criteria and choosing resources that would help them.

Our Behaviour Policy encourages the use of sanctions that allow pupils to reflect on their choices and increasingly take responsibility for their actions.

Pupils vote in members of the School Council who meet regularly and discuss items of interest within the whole pupil group. Forthcoming meetings are highlighted so that pupils have the opportunity to air any issues they have and outcomes are shared at class level.

Pupils vote for Head Boy and Head Girl.

In history lessons, assemblies and worship we learn about the development of democratic ideas e.g. the abolition of slavery and Apartheid. We use opportunities such as the general and local elections to hold mock elections, encouraging pupils to argue, defend and vote for particular points of view.

The Rule of Law

Classes create their own class rules. There is a clear behaviour policy that is understood by all. Visits from the police service reinforce the message of right and wrong.

We continually highlight the rules of the Church through the RE curriculum and through assemblies and worship, covering the Ten Commandments.

Mutual Respect

Positive relationships are encouraged and modelled pupil-pupil, adult-pupil, adult-adult. Pupils are involved in the development of class rules.

There are clear Anti-bullying and Equality policies that are understood by all.

Good manners are encouraged in all areas of school life and are celebrated.
The school’s mission statement is inclusive and encourages respect for all.

The school’s Mini-Vinnies group supports the disadvantaged and seeks to make a real contribution to social inclusion and social justice.

The curriculum, particularly RE and PSCHE lessons reinforce the message that every person is a unique individual created in the image of God.

Tolerance of those with different faith and beliefs

Our worship and assemblies encourage respect for all (e.g. our “Statements to Live By” programme of worship).
The school’s Equalities Policy promotes tolerance of differences and encourages us to celebrate diversity.

Through RE, PSHCE and other areas of the curriculum pupils deepen their understanding of different cultures, faiths and beliefs.

We dedicate part of our RE curriculum time to learning about other faiths.  We use the gospel stories to show how Jesus encouraged tolerance e.g. The Good Samaritan, The Ten Lepers, and Zaccheus.
